Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay is still using the term “day-to-day” to describe Van Jefferson’s status heading into the team’s Thursday Night Football matchup against the Buffalo Bills, but reports are starting to surface that the receiver will not suit up for the NFL Kickoff game.
Jefferson, 26, is dealing with a knee injury that he suffered this summer. The receiver underwent surgery on the injury shortly thereafter with the team holding out hope that he would be ready for Week 1. It seems highly unlikely, however, that Jefferson will play based on reports from Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN .
Wilson reported on Tuesday that Jefferson was unlikely to play against Buffalo.
“Although Jefferson’s procedure on Aug. 2 was characterized as minor by coach Sean McVay, the receiver is “not ready to go,” per a source,” Wilson wrote.
Wilson’s report lined up with what Fowler said about the Rams receiver on Twitter.
“Was told Jefferson had been looking more like a Week 2-3 return,” Fowler tweeted. “Rams still holding out hope, though.”
When healthy, Jefferson is expected to start alongside Cooper Kupp and Allen Robinson. Last season, Jefferson caught 50 passes for 802 yards and six touchdowns.
Without Jefferson, the Rams would likely fill his spot with Ben Skowronek, Tutu Atwell or Lance McCutcheon.
