Raising Cane’s fanatics in Berkeley who anticipated its delicious crispy chicken tenders debuting in their city will just have to keep dreaming — at least for now. The popular Louisiana-based fast food chain originally planned to open two additional Bay Area stores, which included the outpost at 2580 Bancroft Way, but this location, in particular, is no longer underway, according to a Raising Cane’s spokesperson.

“We are currently looking for another site in Berkeley that is a better fit for Cane’s,” Raising Cane’s spokesperson Julia Doyle told SFGATE in an email. “… We are actively looking for other sites in the area.”

The restaurant was originally planned for development across the street from the heart of UC Berkeley’s campus and was slated for the first floor of a massive new student housing project at 2580 Bancroft Way. Now, the search continues.

Doyle, who is also a fry cook and cashier for Raising Cane’s, added that the team is actively looking for a new location and aims to open in Berkeley as soon as possible. Plans for the upcoming Hayward Raising Cane’s location at 26231 Mission Blvd., however, are still on track, and the store is set to open at the beginning of 2024, Doyle said.

Raising Cane’s debuted its first East Bay location, at 8430 Edgewater Drive in Oakland, back in July, as first reported by KRON4. Since then, the cult of Cane has anticipated the Berkeley-based store to break ground. For now, Caniacs can visit the Oakland store near the Coliseum for their chicken tender cravings until the Cane’s team finds the perfect spot for its upcoming Berkeley location.
