LSU’s Maason Smith out for season with torn ACL from celebrating

LSU’s loss to Florida State keeps getting worse.

Stud defensive tackle Maason Smith tore his ACL while celebrating during the loss and will miss the remainder of the season, according to ESPN.

And it wasn’t even his own play.

Smith jumped in the air after teammate Major Burns tackled Seminoles running back Lawrance Toafili on the team’s first defensive drive of the game. He immediately grabbed his left knee as it buckled upon landing before going to the turf. After leaving the field under his own power, he re-joined the team in street clothes in the third quarter.

The 6-foot-5, 300-pound sophomore was named to the Freshman All-SEC team last year after joining as a top-100 prospect. He recorded four sacks, 19 tackles and five tackles for loss in 2021.

Despite storming back from a late deficit, the Tigers’ matchup with the Seminoles ended in disaster. After driving the length of the field from their own 1-yard-line, a last-second touchdown brought LSU within one. Florida State blocked the extra point, however, spoiling Brian Kelly’s debut.

And now the new head coach will be without one of his defense’s biggest pieces.
