For as long as there have been competitive video games, there have been those who have sought to blur the rules, in order to gain an edge. The never-ending arms race between cheaters and developers is a fascinating one to behold, and things just took a turn for the hilarious in the case of Call of Duty: Vanguard and Warzone, as outlined in a recent post over on the Call of Duty Blog.
Call of Duty’s anti-cheat solution, known as Ricochet, already employs several novel ways of combating players who won’t play by the rules. The first is called Damage Shield, and it simply makes rule-abiding players invulnerable when a cheater is detected, although a tiny amount of damage is still registered, so cheaters can be identified.
The second is known as Cloaking, and it further punishes detected miscreants, by making it impossible for cheaters to see other players, bullets, or even hear any in-game audio, leaving them as easy prey for legitimate players.
The newest addition, and maybe the funniest, is called Disarm, and it’s fairly literal. It works by simply removing all weapons from the cheater… including their fists. So if an enemy is ineffectually flailing at you, without hands, you know they are a no-good cheater.
The blog post in question is a pretty fascinating read, and well worth your time if you have ever been frustrated by cheaters in-game.
