Boohoo backlash was ‘exactly what I was hoping for’

Kourtney Kardashian isn’t backing down.

The reality star, 43, was slammed last week after fast fashion giant Boohoo announced it had recruited her as “the brand’s newest ambassador with a focus on sustainability,” and that she’d be creating two collections with an eco-friendly angle.

Social media users were incensed to see a member of the private-jetting Kardashian-Jenner family being paid to promote sustainable style, like the partnership to “Burger King collaborating with a fitness influencer” and calling it “utter BS,” “insulting” and “embarrassing.”

On Tuesday, Sept. 13 — the day of her line’s launch — Kardashian finally addressed the backlash on Instagram.

“I went back and forth about doing this collection with @boohoo because the first thing I think about when I hear the words ‘fast fashion’ is that it’s bad for our planet,” she began.

“Boohoo approached me to be a sustainability ambassador, and though I knew it would get backlash because the two just don’t go hand in hand, I thought about the fact that fast fashion, or the fashion industry in general, isn’t going anywhere.”

Kardashian’s year-long process of meeting with industry leaders has been captured for a social video series, according to Boohoo’s press release, which will be released for audiences to hear from “specialists in worker welfare, human rights, textile waste, upcycling, resale and vintage fashion.”

According to Kardashian, the partnership still has the potential to change how some people shop.

“I thought about the attention this collaboration would bring to people who may otherwise have no idea about the impacts of fast fashion on our planet. I thought about how pushing Boohoo to make some initial changes and then holding them accountable to larger change would be impactful,” she continued.

“It’s definitely making some noise which is exactly what I was hoping for. I certainly don’t have all the answers, but for someone who has done a fast fashion line collaboration in the past, which didn’t get backlash because I was not calling attention to trying to make better changes, I feel proud about doing it with intention and purpose.”

The Poosh founder then put out a call for “experts who have ideas [or] suggestions” to reach out and share their thoughts.

“I want to help and from my experience so far working with the team I work with at Boohoo, they do too. I will be elaborating on their changes, how we’ve made this line more sustainable, and what I’ve learned we as consumers can do to help… all to come!!” she concluded.
