Alabama redshirt freshman among 4 CB co-starters

Among the closely watched Alabama preseason positional battles, cornerbacks ranked near the top.

The Monday depth chart release didn’t provide much clarity as the Crimson Tide prepares for the 6:30 pm CT visit from Utah State. The four players who had been competing for the two top jobs were listed as co-starters in the Week 1 depth chart.

Three of the four have starting experience at the SEC level with Kool-Aid McKinstry and LSU transfer Eli Ricks listed as co-starters at one side with Khyree Jackson and redshirt freshman Terrion Arnold at the other spot.

Arnold didn’t see any action as a true freshman coming out of Tallahassee but has shown plenty of confidence in Year 2, Nick Saban said Monday.

“I think he’s a lot more comfortable with what he’s supposed to do, how he’s supposed to do it, why he’s supposed to do it that way,” Saban said. “He’s played very well all fall camp.”

McKinstry and Jackson started the national title game against Georgia. He was the sixth start for McKinstry and the first for Jackson while Ricks was a freshman All-American at LSU.

Jackson missed time in the preseason with a groin injury while Ricks missed time with a back injury. Consistency hasn’t always been there with Ricks who has been dealing with multiple injuries since arriving from LSU.

“Consistency in performance is important at every position,” Saban said Monday, “but especially at the cornerback position where you really have to focus because there are going to be five or six plays in the game where you have to make because those five or six plays are going to be critical plays in the game. Could end up being big plays or incompletions so that consistency in performance at that position is really, really important at that position because you have to stay focused and on your game every play, even if you may get challenged in five or six plays in the game. We’ll see who can do that the best.”
